Short Description

Sudden demand spikes, staff shortages, and supply chain disruptions made it nearly impossible to keep up — especially for logistics hubs handling critical supplies like PCR tests. Our client, a UK-based logistics company, needed a way to bring order to the chaos: fast, trackable inventory workflows, minimal errors, and real-time visibility, even with legacy systems in place.

Problem

Our client, a UK-based logistics provider, was under pressure to modernize their warehouse operations. With outdated systems and rising demand during the pandemic, they needed reliable tools to speed up packing, reduce dispatch errors, and support frontline staff. We stepped in to build a suite of native Android apps — scalable, intuitive, and designed around real workflows. Over our multi-year partnership, these tools became a critical part of their day-to-day operations.

Business need

Seamless Integration

Integrating with an outdated backend system without direct access.

Devices Support

Supporting a variety of specialized devices (scanners, printers) with automatic connection.

Workflow Simplification

Simplifying warehouse workflows, such as inventory tracking, dispatch management, and error reduction.

Scalability

Scaling with their growing business while maintaining usability for non-technical staff.

Challenges

The existing backend was outdated and brittle — not built to support modern mobile apps. Integrating new tools meant working around legacy code and strict security restrictions. We had no direct access to key systems, so we had to get creative with how we connected everything reliably and safely.

The warehouse floor ran on a mix of old and new hardware — from handheld scanners to label printers. Our apps had to support all of them out of the box, with zero configuration headaches. That meant building in automatic detection and flexible device handling to avoid disrupting daily operations.

Mistakes in packing or labeling could cause major delays — or worse, lost shipments. To keep things moving, warehouse teams needed instant feedback when something went wrong. We built real-time validation and correction flows right into the apps, so issues could be caught and fixed on the spot.

Fixing warehouse chaos? Let’s talk

Warehouse flow, step by step

We designed and developed 5 interconnected applications to streamline the client’s logistics processes:

The process begins with workers manually checking the contents of each package to ensure all required items—such as brochures, letters, business cards, or products—are included. Using the application, workers confirm the accuracy of the package contents and indicate the next steps for processing. If the package is correctly assembled, it is directed to the appropriate pallet for dispatch. If discrepancies are found, the package is marked as needing further attention.

The “Move” function streamlines the transfer of packages between warehouses, allowing workers to efficiently redirect shipments as required.

To dispatch a completed package from the warehouse, workers create a “Postal Record” (NPR) within the app. Upon creation, the app generates the NPR and provides the option to print a physical shipping label or document. This ensures all dispatches are properly documented and ready for shipment.

At any stage of the process, workers can reprint shipping documents or labels using the app, providing flexibility and ensuring accuracy in record-keeping and logistics. This streamlined workflow enhances operational efficiency, reduces errors, and ensures every package is tracked and accounted throughout its journey.

Key features

Device Compatibility

Successfully developed applications that intelligently identify and connect to a range of scanners and printers. This feature guarantees smooth hardware integration with minimal configuration, allowing warehouse personnel to easily utilize the devices and switch equipment based on their work area without requiring extensive training.

Scalable Architecture

Our team implemented a modular architecture to allow easy adaptation to new backend features. By incorporating user feedback throughout the development process, we ensured the apps remained flexible and highly functional, meeting evolving client needs.

Smart Scanning for Accuracy

To minimize errors, we integrated a smart scanning feature that alerts users if incorrect barcodes are scanned. This functionality significantly reduces mistakes during inventory updates and ensures data accuracy, streamlining warehouse operations.

3rd Party Used

We utilized Firebase to enhance the app's update functionality. Firebase monitors the status of our applications and ensures that users are prompted to install updates in a timely manner. This integration helps maintain optimal app performance and ensures users always have access to the latest features and improvements.

Project Success

Warehouse teams reported a 30% overall improvement in productivity.

Enhanced accuracy in inventory and dispatch processes saved the company thousands in operational costs.

Automation and process improvements contributed to the expansion of the client's business.
